I have a rule about personalized gifts: know the person well enough to know what the picture means to them. A burger might be someone's dream on a card. For somebody else, it's the last thing they want to see after work.
That's where I'd start with custom playing cards. Not with “they're a foodie” or “they have a family,” but with what they actually enjoy. What makes them smile? And are they going to want to shuffle a deck, deal a hand or sit down for a game?

Custom Playing Cards.
Custom playing cards for the friend who loves making burgers
Okay, so look at this burger. All the ingredients are hanging there above the plate, waiting to become lunch. If you have a friend who makes fancy burgers every time you get together, you can probably see where this is going.

Maybe they're a chef, or working toward becoming one, and making food is part of a dream they love talking about. They enjoy showing you what they've made. They also like a poker night, or sitting down with an actual deck for solitaire instead of reaching for their phone. A funny food design could fit that person.
Now imagine somebody working at a burger place as a second job to make ends meet. They hate coming home smelling like grease and don't want to think about another burger. Same picture. Very different gift.
The thing is, the job isn't the connection. The enjoyment is. If you know them well enough, you'll know whether that image says “I get you” or just reminds them of a shift they'd rather forget.
That's the difference I'd look for with any personalized gift: a passion they still enjoy, not just something associated with them.
Personalized playing cards with a photo a grandparent loves
For a grandparent, I'd think about the picture they're always showing people. The one in their wallet, or the one they pull up on their phone when they're talking about the family. They already love sharing it. That's a good place to start.
A family photo on the back of a playing card.
Imagine that photo on a deck they bring out when their friends come over for cards. If they enjoy bridge or another regular card game, it gives the gift a place in something they already like doing. A birthday, a holiday or a just-because gift could all be a reason to give it.
A more formal family portrait could be right, too, especially if you want something that feels like a keepsake. I wouldn't make a rule that one kind of photo is always better. Choose what feels right for your family and what you think the person receiving it would enjoy most.
Make sure the people in the photo are comfortable with how it'll be used. And if your grandparent has a favorite kind of deck, check the card details before ordering. A familiar face on the back doesn't change what they like playing with.
Family playing cards for the people who taught you the game
I remember being the youngest and watching my older siblings and their friends play cards, especially spades. It looked like so much fun. As I got older, there were parties and family gatherings, and I wanted to be part of what was happening at the table. I finally learned to play, too.
A family-portrait playing-card deck.
That's what makes the family-deck idea interesting to me. I'm looking forward to having sets for my own family reunions and gatherings, almost like a team thing. A family photo could belong there because it's our group, our game and our time together.
For game nights with friends, I'd also be into something that connects with the nerdy stuff I like, including old-school cartoons. That's an idea about my taste, not a promise that any particular character or artwork is available to order. For someone else's gift, think about their version of that connection.
The picture doesn't have to do all the work. It just needs to feel like it belongs with the people who are going to use the deck. If you're choosing a reunion photo or a new family picture, start with one everyone is happy to have on the cards.
When another game night gift is the better choice
I wouldn't personalize a gift just to say it's personalized. If you don't know which photo they'd like, whether the joke would land or even whether they enjoy cards, ask a little more first. You can choose a thoughtful gift without guessing at something personal.
| Person you're buying for | A connection worth exploring | A reason to pause |
|---|---|---|
| The friend who loves cooking and playing cards | Food they enjoy making and sharing | The design reminds them of work they don't enjoy |
| A grandparent who brings out a deck with friends | A family photo they already love showing people | You haven't checked their photo or deck preferences |
| Family or friends who gather for games | A shared photo or interest that feels like the group | Not everyone is comfortable with the image |
| Someone whose interests you don't know well yet | Learn a little more before choosing | You're personalizing around an assumption |
An existing design might be the right choice. Another kind of gift might be better. The important part is knowing why you've picked it for that person.
A deck to make your own
If you have someone in mind, take a look at our custom playing cards. The deck includes 52 playing cards and two jokers, with full-color images on the non-suit side and a clear plastic case.

Before you get attached to a particular design, check how to submit your image and what options are available. The photos here give you ideas; they aren't a preview of your finished order. If you want one of the pictured designs, ask whether that exact option is available.
| Before you order | What to check |
|---|---|
| Your image | What can be personalized, where it goes and whether your design is supported |
| Preparing the file | Required file type, resolution and cropping guidance |
| Seeing it first | Whether a proof is offered and when changes can be made |
| Playing with the deck | Exact card dimensions, material and finish |
| The gift date | Production and delivery information for your destination |
| The practical details | Current availability, total cost and applicable cancellation or return terms |
If something matters to you and you can't find the answer, ask before ordering. Especially when you need a gift for a particular date: a delivery estimate isn't a guarantee.
Choose custom playing cards for someone you actually know
For me, the question is simple: does this picture connect with something they enjoy? The burger-loving cook, the grandparent with a favorite photo and the family that gets competitive over spades all give you somewhere to start. They don't give you a shortcut around knowing the person.
When you've got that connection, explore NuKrypton's custom playing cards and check the ordering details for your idea. Pick the picture because it feels like them.
